Training without testing is worthless.
Please remember the following the next time employees are interested in attending high-priced training.
Training without testing is worthless. Sure, you can send your employees to a training program, and they may come away with some new knowledge and skills. But if you don't test them to see if they learned anything or can apply it to their jobs, the training was a waste of time and money.
Consider my own experience with this type of training. We sent over 100 leasing agents to a sales training program at a considerable cost. We noticed a slight increase in sales at first, but when we reviewed the data after 90 days, the leasing agents did the same, so there was no measurable improvement.
The expert who taught the training could have been better. He was teaching great information. But the extra cost of that training could have been better with changing a salesperson's process and testing to confirm the changes had been made.
So, the next time you give your employees a training class, ensure they understand they will be tested afterward. They will take better notes; they will pay attention to the material. The training material must have key action item takeaways you can try to see if they are doing it. For example, if they are supposed to ask for referrals every time, you can monitor that by spot-checking the recorded phone calls and reviewing each agent's referral rate before and after training.
Training is an investment. You want to ensure you are getting a return on your investment. Testing is the best way to do that.
