This guy is brilliant! “Careers are like exclusive nightclubs. Inside the nightclub is success. The advice given to young people is to spend years waiting in line to get in via the front entrance. Your position in the front door line is based on: 1. Experience - Time spent in the line 2. Contacts - Who you know in the line The line for the front door is rigged against young people. The older people ahead of you will always have more experience and contacts. You have to wait for someone to leave the nightclub (retire) for you to move up the line. However, like all nightclubs -- there’s a backdoor entrance. And this line is rigged for young people. In this line, you’re ranked based on your technology skills. Avoid competing with your parents' generation via the front door. Don’t play life’s video game on hard mode. They have decades of experience and nepotism stacked up on you. Instead, play life’s video game on easy mode. Try the technology back door. Technology is the only area of life your parents ask you for advice. And the market values it more than experience and contacts. It’s never been easier for a young person to get in via the back door. Even if you’re in a traditional industry, you can get years ahead in the line by being the young kid in the company that understands AI or social media. Rule of thumb: The more confusing your parents' generation finds it, the better. “ -George Mack @george__mack
