Solve First, Ask Later: The Counterintuitive Interview Strategy That Actually Works. Most candidates ask the wrong questions at the wrong time in the interview process…
“If you ask to be hired mainly because you need a job you are just another problem for the boss; if you can solve many of the problems the boss has right now you are hired.”
— Kevin Kelly
After interviewing hundreds of candidates, here’s what I’ve noticed:
Everyone shows up needing a job.
Almost no one shows up solving a problem.
They ask:
How much vacation time?
Do we work weekends?
What’s the work-life balance?
Totally fair questions—but they’re premature.
That’s like asking about the toppings before the pizza is even in the oven.
Want to stand out? Sell yourself first.
Make it obvious you understand the company’s pain.
Show how you’ll fix something that’s broken.
Make the hiring manager’s job easier the moment you walk in.
Then ask all the questions you want—after they’ve made you an offer. You can always turn down the offer.
You’re not just applying for a job. You’re offering to solve problems.
The faster you internalize that, the faster your career moves.
