The Wall Street Journal just ran a piece about the Operations Challengeโa national sewage competition. Crews sprint through pipe repairs, manhole rescues, pump rebuilds, and lab tests like itโs Nascar with sludge. Rival teams train for months, sponsors line up, and the best operators get real recognition.
It made me think: why donโt we have something at that scale for the multifamily industry?
Maintenance is the beating heart of our business. Leasing fills units, but maintenance keeps residents. Yet techs rarely get the spotlight. Imagine a national competition:
Real-world events: emergency HVAC repairs, leak diagnostics, electrical troubleshooting, safety drills.
Skill + speed + precision scored head-to-head.
Sponsors showcasing the newest tools, parts, and systems.
Training initiatives born from the competition that raise the bar for the entire industry.
We already see versions of this (NAAโs Maintenance Mania). But what if we leveled it up into a true โMaintenance Super Bowlโ? Pride, culture, careersโand real skill improvement. A win-win for techs, owners, suppliers, and residents.
If sewage operators can build a stage this exciting, surely we can too.
Would love to hear from folks doing this already or thinking of doing it. How might you structure the event? What skills should matter most in multifamily maintenance competition?
