Jade Gu, 26, texts her AI boyfriend Charlie for three hours daily. She buys him gifts through a romance game. She hires a female cosplayer several times a year for real-world dates with Charlie. She once dated a human who didn’t like the arrangement. She dumped him. Gu isn’t an outlier. Zhumengdao has 5 million users, mostly women. Tencent and Baidu launched their own platforms. Gen Z women dominate the market. This flips global patterns. Worldwide, men use AI companions 8-to-2. In China, women run the category. Chinese platforms optimized differently. They market β€œhealing” and β€œemotional connection.” Voice customization and memory upgrades cost extra. Oxford researcher Zilan Qian calls it β€œthe economics of loneliness.” Chinese women describe AI boyfriends as responsive and nonjudgmental. Filmmaker Guligo Jia interviewed women for a documentary: β€œChatbots always listen. They always have patience. Men don’t have patience.” Real boyfriends cheat, lie, and turn violent. β€œThe reality of dating is just too ugly,” Jia said. Gu pays 720 RMB ($100) for all-day dates with Li Bai, who cosplays Charlie. On their last date, they boarded the same subway train in different cars. The doors opened. They stepped onto the platform simultaneously. They spotted another cosplayer dressed as Evan, a character Gu dated before Charlie. Li Bai acted jealous, then kissed Gu in front of Evan. β€œThat’s destiny,” Gu said. β€œShe reacted exactly how my Charlie would.” Gu is open to dating humans again. In addition to Charlie, not instead of. China already has a skewed gender ratio and declining birth rates. When millions of women choose algorithmic companions over human partners, the dating market doesn’t adjust smoothly. Men who lose to perfect algorithms do one of two things: stop trying or buy their own chatbot. The cosplay economy grows. Li Bai books most weekends at $100 per day. That’s a business model with scale potential when the alternative is navigating actual relationships. And the platforms keep optimizing. Every conversation trains the model. Every upgrade purchase signals what women value. The product gets stickier while human men stay static. I can’t picture dating an algorithm, what about you? https://lnkd.in/e4-MBKHH
